Introduction to Private Lessons

Are you interested in a more personalized and focused experience in your lessons? In this coaching session, you have the freedom to learn at your pace without the pressures of other students and distractions within group classes. The added benefit of private lessons offer some of the following:

  1. Building confidence in your dance. Meeting other dancers do not have to be intimidating. A lesson could help get you that support in tackling the dance world, especially if you’re interested in learning some steps first.
  2. Class pacing. Sometimes group classes are moving a little too fast or too slow for you. Having an instructor coach you personally could maximize your learning time.
  3. Receiving immediate feedback. We rotate ourselves within group lessons so that each student receives unique feedback from us. Within a private lesson, all of that time is focused on you.
  4. Addressing dance goals. Whether your dance is geared towards social dancing, auditions or performances we can craft these lessons to address your immediate, short term and long term goals.
  5. Quick Refresher. You’ve done some dancing before, but you want in depth technical material typically not covered in group lessons.
  6. Sharing a partner experience. This could be a safer and less intimidating environment if you and your partner wishes share a lesson together.
  7. Inspiration. When you need a boost of creativity or challenge in your dance, a private lesson can guide you in areas that group lessons would’ve not.

Questions

Q: Should I take a lesson from a lead instructor or a follow instructor?
A: If you are taking private lessons early in your dance journey, it is often helpful to take a lesson from an instructor of the opposite role. For example, taking a lesson as a lead from a follow instructor could help build up strong fundamental habits on what it is like to lead a professional level instructor. The instructor can provide tactile feedback on connection and body frame.

If you’re learning as a follow, a lead instructor would give you feedback on responsiveness on how it feels to be led. The instructor can give techniques that address frame and connection, as well.

Q: How many lessons should I take?
A: Most students feel comfortable socially dancing at a beginner level after 4 – 6 hours of lessons. Some students supplement their classes with an additional 2 – 3 hours of weekly practice through social dancing or at a studio, which would help solidify these concepts and help them graduate into the intermediate level sooner.

Q: Can I bring a partner?
A: Yes, you can bring up to one other partner to split the costs of the lesson. For group sizes greater than two, I recommend joining group lessons offered in San Diego.
